I see Christian pilgrims so redeemed from sin

Called out of darkness a new life to begin

Were you ever in the valley when the way is dark and dim

Did you ever drink the cup of loneliness with Him

Did you ever have them laugh at you and say it was a fake

The stand that you so boldly for the Lord did take

Did you ever have them mock at you and say in ways quite grim

Did you ever drink the cup of loneliness with Him

Oh my friends 'tis bitter sweet while here on earthly sod

To follow in the footsteps that our dear Savior trod

To suffer with the Savior and when the way is dark and dim

To think of the bitter cup of loneliness with Him

+Joseph Catignani When I listen to songs like this, I never really thought about it but I suppose I filter them through a non-theist mindset, so I enjoy them and their metaphors. There was likely a wise man who lived long ago and who believed in the brotherhood of man, and realized and taught the metaphor that is almighty God is found in the living man, and he shared his ideas and philosophy with others by walking the walk and talking the talk. Whatever sects of humanity have turned, perhaps twisted, that philosophy into over the millennia is something else, but that simple philosophy remains intact and important regardless. Do unto others as you'd do unto yourself.

i wish there was a non-theist version of this, its amazing, but the tables have surely turned since 1961... or maybe its just the south

It's not a HW song George Jones and Burl Stephens wrote it.

I'm not going to pretend to be musically enlightened and say that I came here on my own. saw him in the ocean too.

There is an even better version of this song by George Jones. It is really edgy and the vocal really pushes hard. It was recorded around 1957, I would guess, and I think it was on the D label. I have had an LP for decades, which is a compilation of mostly D label recordings. It's on the Cascade label and it is titled "20 Great Country Recordings" or something like that. (I'm at the library.) The LP also has several great early Willie Nelson recordings like "What A Way To LIve"
