The game called tic tac toe in the States Is called noughts and crosses in the South of England, aughts and crosses in the North.Anybody who thinks he's saying hearts and crosses can't be a native English speaker.

Simon - see my answer to mikeyduke. I grew up in the 40s when Goerge was in his prime and it was common knowledge that it was 'Oughts', Lancashire dialect for noughts. Actually, an alternative spelling is 'aught', so he could be singing that - but they sound the same so who cares?

Believe me mikey - he does sing 'oughts' and crosses. My old gran used to always say 'ought' when reading out numbers which included a zero. Listen at .27 seconds when he sings "I'm much to shy to play a game of hearts'. He pronounces hearts totally differently, stressing the 'h at the beginning of the word. Obviously the hearts he draws on the grid are a cute little idea by the writers of the screen play. After all, the song is titled "Noughts and Crosses" not Hearts and Crosses.

I think he's singing "hearts and crosses". I'm pretty sure of that, because I thought it before I saw him drawing hearts.

The beautiful Kay Walsh, who plays George's girl friend, was born in London to Irish parents. She married the great director David Lean ("Lawrence of Arabia") and appeared in a number of his films. She was Nancy in "Oliver Twist." Today she is best remembered for her favorite role as Alec Guinness' long-suffering bar maid lady friend in "The Horses Mouth" in which she wore a dirty old wig, a long way away from the gorgeous girl she is in this film.

he actually sings 'oughts and crosses'. Those with a strong Lancashire dialect used to call nought - 'ought'

Noughts I think, because the song is called Noughts and Crosses. "Game of Hearts" does feature in the lyrics also.
