Just listen to the drumming, isn't it just Philtastic? This is tied for my favorite Genesis tune with "Squonk". If you really like this, search for the earlier demo version that has harmonies on the "you might recall" part and a slightly different intro and bass line.

A simple song but so powerful yet there are no bands today who can jam this because it's a jazz song and rock song and blues song all at the same time. No one can be Banks and Rutherford and Collins again. They are the best.

There wasn't going to be a suite on Abacab. They just individually wrote and recorded tracks and some just didn't make the cut, at the time. Phil has jokingly said they wrote it (You Might Recall) in the time it takes to play it. My guess is they just didn't see it as intelligent a song as the others on the album. It's beautifully simple with a few key changes and the classic Phil/Genesis slow-building crescendo. Lastly, it has a great message of growth, self evaluation, forgiveness, and the gift of second chances. One of my favs! Never gets old!
