Get out of the way fat man. You got something to do

Go fill up your hands till they're shining up at you.

You gotta get out while there's gold in the air

It's falling like water, coming down from the hills.

Go West young man

Earn a dollar a day just like your family said.

You're rolling your days right on into the night

The head of the line's going way out of sight.

Go West young man like your family said

All along the wagons

All along the dusty trail.

Seventeen years not over a day

Like children in the wild.

Your mother's milk still wet on your face

And no one to pray for your safe journey home.

Out beyond the desert

Across the mountains by the fall.

Servants who leave their masters house

Are walking all the way.

The golden fields that beckoned you

Are darkened by the years.

Go West Young Man

If you knew then what you know today

You'd be back where you started a happier man

And leave all the glory to those who have remained.

So Go West Young Man

Go West Young Man, like your family said.

I received this album off my father after being hit by a car on my push bike earlier that day. No serious injuries, but very close, and a bit upsetting. I listened to it, loved it and played it so much. Then as I was young I soon moved on. I came back to it 3 years later the night I first made love. It was on in the background at my girlfriends choice. Wow. 37 years ago. I have the original 1978 vinyl and at least 2 cd's of it. A great album. A great band.

Who asked them to "Remaster" these classic albums? I don't want to hear beefed up drum tracks with more pronounced snare beats with extra reverb added! Do they really think they are making them sound better? Because they sounded just fine in their original form! Leave the classics alone!

So cool to me that I've sort of 're-discovered' this great band. This is the first time I've ever heard this song......wow, nice...Banks is so freaking great, he was really ahead of the curve...I just watched that documentary on Showtime. He didn't get NEAR enough credit for his brilliance.

I remember where I was and the thoughts that were going through my head when i first heard this song.Such a haunting melody and much nostalgia.A lot of bittersweet feelings going through my head but a really powerful delivery of a song.

While this is one of my least favorite Genesis albums (which isn't saying much because I enjoy it anyway), this song with Down and Out and Ballad of Big are among my favorites. I kinda understand that the band don't feel really fond of this one, some songs are plain boring and uninspired.

An unheralded classic of strangely haunting power, this 'un launched one of the most memorable concerts I've ever attended: 3 1/2 hours of Genesis---without so much as an opening act or intermission---playing the pseudo-intimate Kiel Opera House in St. Louis (I was in the balcony, looking almost directly down at the stage, the KOH being more tall than it was deep). With Chester Thompson augmenting on drums Genesis delivered the goods that night! Agree with the WIND AND WUTHERING PART II comment; really, this album's ONLY concession to commercialism was (in hindsight) the sweet, brilliant "Follow You, Follow Me"---one of the few hits that could ever bring a tear to my eye. The album's biggest initial problem, really, was production---because most of the material was stellar.

This song is like Shanghai-la, out of nowhere comes the most beautiful music. Love It.

Always loved the "sell out" Genesis, and didn't like the prog Genesis. Then after 20 years I decided to to check them out again, and man was I an idiot before! This song sticks out as just a great groove, kick ass synth melody lines, and killer Phil Fills.

One of their worst albums, easily.
