I heard "Aisle of Plenty" through the wall of a next-door flat during a stay in London in 1976, rushed out and asked what it was, and bought "Selling England by the Pound" the next day without hearing the rest. Now nearly 40 years have passed, I am 63 and live alone on a little island above the arctic circle in Norway, but I still have about 90 minutes of Genesis favourites from "Selling England by the Pound", "A Trick of the Tail", and "Wind and Wuthering", some of which can make my eyes water, but this beautifully sad little gem "Aisle of Plenty" can still cause the tears to actually roll down my cheeks......

If Genesis sang this live today, inflation would demand changes like"Anchor Butter down to £3.40 for a ½"

@Walter Florent - I see the mentioning of this random marketing stuff to mean a couple of things. In many cases throughout our lives we leave many things unquestioned, following blindly into the dark wasteland the politicians and other men-of-agendas formulate for us - this is very similar to Rush's BU2B: "Buying what we're sold." Not only that but it also reminds us of the triviality of life in general - the fact that we burden the world by taking groceries from the store to what? Only come back next week and take more. Of course this can be applied to every aspect of our lives with our families, jobs, loves, hobbies, beliefs, all of it is meaningless because the truth is that we will all meet death one day despite those things. It doesn't matter if I am the CEO of an important company, I too will meet death one day. The rambling of this random stuff about food, companies etc. just shows how meaningless they are compared to the big picture. The ending is the best part, "It's Scrambled Eggs." Metaphor for what I just said - it's all just so confusing and mixed up just like scrambled eggs. What is the point of life when things are so bleak - when the fat old woman outside the saloon is playing us like a fiddle to just scheme our money out of pocket or when the volcano requires a dance out of us to just not get burned?... It's all just scrambled eggs...

'Wimpy dreams' are also associated with food.

Leonwalter below wondered what Fine Fare was about.Well, like Tesco and Co-Operative, Safeway and FineFare were also supermarkets. Both of these are no longer around (I have a feeling that Safeway was absorbed by Asda) but I'm showing my age now because Finefare has been gone for decades.Cripes-why I do know this-I need to get out more.

You are so right. And indeed, Phil's drumming here, is so subtle yet complex, and the rythm is so clever. I can listen to it over and over again.

It's interesting how that appears to be one of the themes on this record. The clash between the old English tales of medieval legend, myth, and countryside, combined with the modern vices of commerce, thrift, and supermarkets. Interesting how the line "Tess Cooperates" sounds similar to "Tesco" and "Co-operative", two major supermarket chains in the UK.
