On this day in 1956 {June 4th} Gene Vincent & his Blue Caps appeared in their first live concert at the Municipal Auditorium in Norfolk, Virginia {Gene Vincent's hometown}...At the time his debut record, "Be-Bop-A-Lula", was in its first week on Billboard's Top 100 chart at position #78*; six weeks later on July 19th, 1956 it would peak at #9 {for 1 week} on the Top 100 and it stayed on the chart for 20 weeks...Between June 1956 and December 1957 the group had six Top 100 records; their next biggest hit was "Lotta Lovin'", which peaked at #13 in 1957...Gene Vincent, born Vincent Eugene Craddock, passed away on October 12th, 1971 at the young age of 36 {ruptured stomach ulcer}...May he R.I.P.* According to Billboard, "Be-Bop-A-Lula" was actually tied at #78 with both "A Little Love Can Go A Long, Long Way" by the Dream Weavers and "Mr. Wonderful" by Sarah Vaughan...

Unfortunately this marriage of sounds of Sweet Gene Vincent`s voice and the late great Cliff` Gallup`s guitar defined Genes true sound for the rest of his life. His voice, full of menace was complemented by Cliffs strong guitar licks, full of menace themselves and gave a performance that was not,and is not easy to forget.I heard this when I was 11 years old and I still hang on every note of Cliff`s solos at 69 years old.Gene was never the same without Cliff, but Cliff,a true talent ,turned his back on showbiz to bring up his family, and remained semi -pro to the end of his (short) life.R.I.P.Cliff you are remembered.

One of my son's friends heard this on a c.d. playing in pick-up and said what is that? I told him this was real music. I also told him you just have to listen to it. No explanation is possible.

Gene Vincent recorded more than 200 songs including many of the finest and best loved Rock ‘n’ Roll classics such as Bluejean Bop, Lotta Lovin’ and Dance To The Bop. He became an enormously influential figure known for his black leather image, hell-raising lifestyle and the sheer brilliance of his wild stage act.
