Gene Pitney - It Hurts to be in Love (live,16.05.1966)

It hurts to be in love

When the only one you love

Turns out to be someone who's

Not in love with you

It hurts to love her so

When deep down inside you know

She will never want you

No matter what you do

And so you cry a little bit

(It hurts to be in love)

Ah, I die a little bit

(It hurts to be in love)

Day and night, night and day

It hurts to be in love this way

How long can I exist

Wanting lips I've never kissed

She gives all her kisses

To somebody else

She thinks I'm just a friend

Though it hurts I must pretend

The only way to keep her

Is to keep it to myself

And so I cry a little bit

(It hurts to be in love)

Oh, I die a little bit

(It hurts to be in love)

Day and night, night and day

It hurts to be in love this way

And so I cry a little bit

(It hurts to be in love)

Oh, I die a little bit

(It hurts to be in love)

Day and night, night and day

It hurts to be in love this way

It hurts to be in love

Day and night, night and day

It hurts to be in love

Night and day, day and night

It hurts to be in love

Day and night, night and day

This isn't live, but that's OK. He's just miming which was almost always the case with television appearances in the 1960s.

one of the greatest brill building era rock songs ever written. melody lines / use of minor chords x 10 / the whole thing is lennon-mccartney level 1964 songwriting. and gene pitney's air-raid siren lead/harmony stacked voices always great. singular type great. in all of the white doo wop NYC lead voices, NOBODY else sounded like pitney. outside of NYC? forgedditabout it. pitney's high range was like del shannon's falsetto on steroids, without even needing the falsetto technique.Twenty Four Hours to Tulsa and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence are two of the greatest rock/pop records ever made, and It Hurts To Be in Love is even better. and oh man...Backstage is also a HOF corker (as a song and a vocal performance). .

Great voice. A big influence on me when I was a kid in the early 60's.

What a wonderful bit of old film with a great singer. Thank you for the upload. I saw Gene Pitney on stage in the 60s in Bournemouth. He talked ,among other things, about his health. I think he took lots of thing to keep himself healthy. It was so sad that he died so relativity young. In my opinion, his talent was immense.
