I listened really close to the words, and I think the song is very sweet! I am the mother of a daughter that when she was 12, she looked to be 17! I can understand how the girl would want to be with an older guy and not tell him just how old she really is! But, some way, he finds out just how old the girl is, and he wants to know why she didn't tell him her age, so he tells her to go home to her mother, because she is just a baby, and he has to hurt her feelings so she will go and not ever come back!!! I think it is very sweet of the guy to do this as soon as he found out how young she was, because he could still be with her and who would ever know, but him and her!!! This song is "NOT" about all the bad things that have been said about it. BUT, WHAT IT IS, IS A BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY ABOUT A YOUNG GIRL WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH AN OLDER GUY THAT HAD NO IDEA OF HER AGE AND HE FELL IN LOVE WITH HER TOO, AND THEN HE HAD TO BREAK HER HEART SO SHE WOULD LEAVE HIM, NEVER TO RETURN!!!

I'm a long-time Neil Diamond fan, but this past week, I have been trying to learn more about Gary Puckett and the Union Gap. I find it intriguing that Gary has done two of Neil's songs, this one and "I Am I Said". Since Neil has also done a fair amount of covers in his career, I wonder if they have any more songs in common. Of course, some people get "This Girl Is a Woman Now" and "Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon" mixed up!
