During the mid-60's, just as in todays "music" it was very common for fill-in musicians to record on other groups studio releases. This is nothing unusual. Obviously this includes vocals as well. You should know this. I have nothing against the Davies brothers or their band. I saw Gary perform live in 1965 and he did many copies of other bands' hits . 99% of the time his band's version was done better & with more talent than the original. Sorry, more folks agree with me than with you.

You do realize, I hope, that the Playboys didn't play on most of their recordings (including this one) and that Gary's lead vocals were augmented with the voice of Ron Hicklin. Oh, and this is NOT rock & roll at its finest. It's syrupy filler and an insult to Ray Davies.
