Words and music by Rick Nelson.

I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends

A chance to share old memories and play our songs again

When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name

No one recognized me, I didn't look the same

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.

You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself

People came from miles around, everyone was there

Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air

Over in the corner, much to my surprise

Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes wearing his disguise

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.

You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself

lott-in-dah-dah-dah, lot-in-dah-dah-dah

Played them all the old songs, I thought that's why they came

But no one heard the music, we didn't look the same

I said hello to "Mary Lou", she belongs to me

When I sang a song about a honky-tonk, it was time to leave

But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.

You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself

lot-dah-dah-dah (lot-dah-dah-dah), lot-in-dah-dah-dah

Someone opened up a closet door and out stepped Johnny B. Goode

Playing guitar like a-ringin' a bell and lookin' like he should

If you gotta play at garden parties, I wish you a lotta luck

But if memories were all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck

And it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.

You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself

lot-dah-dah-dah (lot-dah-dah-dah), lot-in-dah-dah-dah

Well it's all right now, I learned my lesson well

You see, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself.

Great story telling through song. It's like how Smoke on the Water tells a story about an event.

PEQUINITO / sound choice. Very well done, sir(s),. I had to relisten to this to confirm it wasn't an alternative take by the Man Himself, Ricky Nelson. A Well Put Together video. Again, "Well Done".

I remember when the song was released in 1972 hearing the story of what the song was about.    I suppose some people have their glory days but just can't make the comeback they would like.   Give Nelson credit, however, he learned and profited from it.

Great song, shared by a friend earlier today. Remember singing along to it. An important lesson to all of us, as too many don't like change, but Change is Life. So, we need to please ourselves more! Thanks to James Polloreno for sharing the info about Howard Hughes. My dad worked for Ethiopian Airlines in the 60s, which was a joint venture with TWA - whose chairman was then Howard Hughes. I loved the film, "The Aviator" as a result.

Nicely done: the video, the story, the singing! I liked his parents' TV show and I always enjoyed his music.

Thank you for explaining this song for us. Ricky Nelson should always be remembered and not just for the tragic way he died. Let's think about living and some of his great songs of which this is but one of many.
