Some misinformation here. The guitarists on the original album version of "Cosmic Slop" were Garry Shider and Ron Bykowski, the only Caucasian guitarist that was a full-time Funkadelic. Ron played the leads and Garry played the rhythm. The riff to "Cosmic Slop" actually was Bootsy Collins'. Eddie was not in Funkadelic at the time that "Cosmic Slop" was recorded. He did rejoin the band soon after, appearing in a promotional video along with the rest of the band, including Bykowski, but he didn't play on the record.Around 1974, Eddie Hazel was incarcerated after assaulting an airline flight attendant while high on PCP. He hallucinated and attacked her. Eddie was in and out of Funkadelic from this point onward, at times doing session work for other artists. He played guitar on the Temptations' "Shakey Ground," for example, and "Disco Lady" by Johnny Taylor.Michael Hampton and his cousin Lige Curry were teenagers in Cleveland, OH when they attended an afterparty following a Funkadelic gig. Lige had the connection. At the afterparty, the two played "Maggot Brain" along with another musician. George Clinton was there and was summoned in to hear them play; it wasn't an official audition. Soon thereafter, he contacted Hampton's parents who had to grant permission for Michael to go out on tour with the band, as he was underaged at 17 years of age. He was flown to Washington, DC where he played his first gig at the Capitol Center without a rehearsal or run-through. He assumed lead guitar duties and "Maggot Brain" became his staple, even when Eddie Hazel re-joined the band at various points. The two guitarists would perform the song in different ways; they never worked out an official arrangement. At times Mike would play the entire lead and Eddie would sit back in the rhythm section; others, they would trade lead parts and then solo in unison at the coda. Re Eddie Hazel and Jimi Hendrix, the two guitarists had mutual respect for each other's talents. Jimi was an influence for Eddie.Jimi Hendrix lived briefly with the Isley family and played guitar in the band while Ernie Isley was a kid. Ernie learned from watching Jimi play, not the other way around.

Despite the groovy beat and shiny guitar solos, this truly is a sad song...
