Playing a Jeff Porcaro-inspired funk groove (lots of ghosts) on the song "Just Kidding" by Eliane Elias. I'm performing live with the Columbia Basin Jazz Orchestra, December 15th, 2007. This is Part 1 of 2. See more at my website: www.derekmunson.com!

I'm a better actor than I am a drummer. That's the secret. ;) Thanks for the kind words. :D

You don't look that nervous dude. Good ol' Jeff would be proud of ya, keep the good work.

LOTS of practice, my friend! I just sat one evening and played that groove on a pad for a half-hour and got my hands feeling right with it. Even on the night that this was shot, I was a little nervous to play such a thick groove. It turned out decent, I guess, so I'm happy with it. ;)

I definitely understand the concept of the Purdie/Porcaro groove....but how are you playing all the ghosts/hi hat pattern at that tempo? Really great job.

Thank you for the compliment! Yes, the bass player is right in front of me and to my left - the dark haired guy (his name is Juan). He is insanely talented and played all the notes (and then some), but you don't hear it in the "Part 1" video because the bass amp was pointed away from the camera. You hear the upright bass in the second half of the song (see "Part 2" video) because you're hearing the natural tone of the bass there. So yeah - it's the amp, not the player. ;)

cool. You do have a bassist right? In the original song the bass sound is prominent, but here not so much. But also... wow you're hitting those drums with such rhythm.

Thanks! This big band only rehearses twice a month or so, and we had a total of about 4 or 5 rehearsals where we actually read through it, so I'm glad it comes off okay. ;)

If I had any video of Juan, it would be up already. The guy is a maniac! I will try to get some of him and I in the future. I have some behind the scenes footage from a studio recording we did, but that's about it.
