I first became aware of Dawn Upshaw from a TV recording of a late night BBC prom which eventually appeared on an obscure channel on Brazilian television many years ago. I was transfixed. It doesn't matter what she sings, she is always ravishing. Such musicianship, an amazing technique, a beautiful sound capable of infinite variation, an understanding of all the many styles she sings, a personality..... You name it: she's got it.

The two best renditions I've heard were those of Tony Bennett (on his "At Carnegie Hall" album) and Johnny Hartmann Not saying that this is therefore more of a man's song than a woman's. Just my two cents. Maybe because the singer of this song must be rather vulnerable, and it is more moving to hear a vulnerable male singer than a female? Just a thought -

I'm so glad to see a live posting of this number by the incomparable Dawn Upshaw. I have the recording "I Wish It So" - she signed the CD booklet for me. Dawn is at home in just about any kind of music she wishes to sing. To me, the best singer of the 2nd half of the 20th Century. And she's still working - and that includes singing - after surviving breast cancer. What a singer! What a woman! Brava diva Dawn!

Lovely to find this live performance here. I have Dawn Upshaw's "I Wish It So" CD, which includes this song. She's certainly a captivating and expressive singer, at home with the musical theater as well as the classical repertoire.
