Being from Boston (Freddy Cannon's hometown), I recall that this record got quite a bit of airplay on the city's two top-40 stations at the time (WBZ and the old WMEX) in early 1966 (I was a young lad then!).

Was this in fact from a TV show titled "Wing A Ding Ding"?Was it local? (and if so, where?) Syndicated?

I'd have to say this is his best hit (it was way ahead of its time - this sound like something from the 1970s). I'm surprised it wasn't quite a bit bigger.

On this day in 1966 {March 5th} Freddy Cannon performed "The Dedication Song" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand' One month earlier on Feb. 19th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart ; eventually it peaked at #41 & spent 6 weeks on the Top 100 It would be fifteen years before he would enter the Top 100 again; in 1981 he teamed up with the Belmonts with "Let's Put The Fun Back In Rock 'N Roll", it reached #81 on the Top 100 Mr. Cannon celebrated his 72nd birthday this past Dec. 4th

Do you think all those High Schools he gives a shout out to, ever needed metal detectors at the entrance and security guards shaking down the students?

"The Dedication Song" just missed the national Top 40 following it's debut in February 1966. Over it's six week chart run it peaked at #41 -- inxplicably -- because it is such a GREAT record. It was also Freddy's last to reach Billboard's Hot 100 national singles chart until 1981, when he came back with "Let's Put The Fun Back in Rock 'n' Roll." As it deals with radio dedications, it closes out the classic Reader's Digest CD box set "Dedicated To The One I Love."

I picked him up in my new 1966 mustang and brought him from Wausau Wi to Marshfield WI to play at the Airway Bary with a band called Doc and The Interns. He put on a super show and then came down and sat with us and talked he is really a nice guy.

"The Dedication Song" was actually a hit in the spring of 1966, a few months after "Action," and the two of them together were not only among Freddy's greatest hits but also his last after 20 before these since 1959. Freddy would not chart again until 1981 when he put out "Let's Put The Fun Back In Rock 'n' Roll." Incredibly, THIS classic rocker missed the national Top 40, cresting at #41. "The Dedication Song" should have charted far higher, as it remains a soul-lifting delight even today.

This was his last hit form what I've been told. I wasn't born til this song came out, and I didn't come out til late Dec! BUT I love this stuff! I wish I was bornearlier so I could have seen these performers live in their prime!
