The hit that's never played today. But it received plenty of airplay back then. The version you most commonly hear on YT is the shortened CD version. This is the original 45 single that was played on the air. What is the difference? If you listen at 2:38 on my video the original version goes into a bridge consisting of a repeat of a stanza--the first part is female voices singing "ooo," and then Freda finishes the stanza, then goes into repeating choruses. In the newer CD version, the bridge is replaced by a reprise of the intro, followed by repeated choruses.

On this day in 1970 {November 14th} Freda Payne performed "Band of Gold" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'...Four months earlier in July 1970 the song peaked at #3 {for 1 week}; its last day on the chart was September 5th...On the same 'Bandstand' show she also performed "Deeper and Deeper"; at the time it was at #27, fourteen days earlier it had peaked at #24 {for 2 weeks}...Between April 1970 and January 1972 she had six Top 100 records; "Band of Gold" was her only Top 10 hit, her next biggest hit was "Bring the Boys Home", it peaked at #12 {for 2 weeks} on August 1st, 1971...Freda Charcilia Payne celebrated her 72nd birthday two months ago on September 19th {2014}...

I haven't heard this song on the radio in a long time. This is a great song! Unfortunately, the radio stations keep on playing Band of Gold and just totally ignore this one.

The song entered the Billboard top 100 the week ending September 12 1970.

This song was actually released in 1971. I still have my mother's original copy of the 45 that was released on Invictus Records. The flip side is "Unhooked Generation" which was Freda Payne's first release, prior to "Band of Gold". The flip side of "Band of Gold" was "The Easiest Way to Fall". There are so many songs that were popular in the '70s that are never heard today...the only way to hear them again is to collect vinyl, like I do. :-)

What a GREAT song! Equally as good as "Band of Gold" in my opinion. Also notice a slight resemblance here in looks (face only) to Paula Abdul...But Freda is sexier!)

Actually I first heard it when I was 14 at a camp in the Poconos on WABC. A kid in the bunk had a combo radio/rape recorder and that's what gave me the idea of taping my favorite songs. That September I was surprised to hear this played on WIP as well as others I had heard on WABC. What great times those were.

I was just a month away from turning 13 when this song was out. WIP was a good station bac then. But my main station was WFIL. Sadly, WIP is all sports talk and WFIL.is all religious programming.

I've talked with a couple program directors of oldies stations, and as a rule of thumb, they only play top 10 hits according to the national pop charts. Only exception that I've come across is if a song made a regional top 10 chart where the station is located.

Yeah, that's the sorry state of "oldies" radio; they seem to reduce most artists to one song. Thank goodness for '60s clubs, where cool DJs will spin songs like "Deeper and Deeper", keeping the music alive.

Nowadays, you don't even hear this song on the radio anymore. They're always playing her first hit, Band of Gold. Back then, you did.

On this day in 1970 {November 8th} Freda Payne performed "Deeper and Deeper" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... Two months earlier on September 12th it entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #24 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #9 on Billboard's R&B chart and #33 on the United Kingdom's Singles chart... Was the release that succeeded her smash hit "Band of Gold", which peaked at #3 both in America and England... R.I.P. Mr. Sullivan {1901-1974}...
