@rideasherride Ur NUTS!!! Ginger was a good dancer and she worked very hard at it but Rita was a trained dancer with a natural ability and a sensuality that Ginger lacked. If you wanna see Rita really show you how its done. Look up "Down to Earth", she'll blow ur socks off!!!!

Her 'partnership' with Fred was over at this point and they re-teamed only once ('The Barkleys of Broadway') and only because Judy Garland was too ill to perform. Whether Rita was Fred's favorite is open to debate, but by all accounts he was impressed with her ability to learn routines very quickly. This, in contrast to Ginger who had to rehearse for weeks with Hermes Pan to learn the dances before even trying them with Fred.

Rita was born Margarita Carmen Cansino in Brooklyn, NY in 1918. Yo, Brooklyn! She was at minimum a third generation dancer -- her father and his father were master dancers in Spain and her mother was a Zeigfeld girl. Rita started dancing as soon as she could walk and made her first stage appearance at six years old! Thanks for posting!

Too many comments here comparing Rita to Ginger, and it's an apples and oranges debate. I'd rather concentrate on the special time capsule that is this film. Rita was still in transition here; billed as a lead, but not yet the 'femme fatale' she would immortalize in films like GILDA and LADY FROM SHANGHAI. Here she is a sparkling dancer- breathtakingly lovely, still a tad Latina in this stylish rumba with Astaire. She had changed her surname, but had not yet lightened her hair. Just glorious.
