The original lyrics did not express hatred of African Americans but rather were an indication of the attitude of white America that they were inferior and rather chidlike and therefore to be treated in a patronizing manner.

To Shinigami - Keep studying the music and the culture. Synthesize what you assimilate into new statements and keep things moving forward. You're doing really good so far, Kid.

The original lyrics are racist and over time, tastes shifted, hence the revised lyrics. This, I believe, was recorded in London in 1930. We had to wait until the 1940's to see Astaire, with new lyrics DANCING to this. Listening to the way Astaire takes liberties with the melody line singing the song the second go-round, I would have given my eye-teeth to see what Cab Calloway would have done with this song had he recorded or filmed it in 1930. Cab was just getting started, whipping "The Missourians," a rough-at-the edges jam band, into what became a stellar show and Jazz presentation unit during the Depression and on into the Swing Era. Part of his appeal in the early days of his big-band-leading career was his use of his dancing chops, which were FORMIDABLE.

The original version was about the popular flapper fad of taking their dates to Harlem to listen to real jazz. The original song lyrics were written in 1929 and released by Harry Richman in 1930 for a film of the same name. It was indeed about black people in Harlem (Lennox Avenue). During WW2, Irving himself changed the lyrics to watching rich people walking down Park Avenue. I think that causes a lot of confusion-2 completely different sets of lyrics for the same tune.

From the women talking, it sounds like it was taken from a film. His biography lists him as first singing the "revised" lyrics for the film Blue Skies.

+DrCerebro Correction: This song was not considered racist in the early 20th century. That doesn't mean that it isn't actually a racist song. In a less civilized society where it was normal and accepted to treat black people badly, there was no such thing as being racist towards black people. Treating black people badly was just the normal order of things. This song was never actually written with bad intent or as a racist song, but that's because you could literally say anything about black people and it was socially acceptable. It's a lot like how a person with a lot of pets might not think their house stinks; they're so entrenched in the stink that it's just a neutral smell to them. In reality, though, the house still stinks - just like this song is still racist.

This song was seriously bowdlerised in Blue Skies though. It was pretty much about rich black people. Still a good song though. Better than any "music" out now.

I'm cleaning up a late 20's safety razor I found metal detecting today, and brushing to the tempo of the music. It's a known fact razors clean better in the presence on Fred Astaire.
