When Frankie left Mercury Records, he made a promise not to re-record any of his Mercury records for 5 years. In 1957 that 5 year period was up. Frankie with Paul Weston made an Album

of his early recordings. Columbia called it "ROCKIN'" (WHY??)

I think these recordings were better than the orginals. Maybe it's because up till then I had never heard most of the orginals. I believe this is Frankie's best performance of "Desire"

My mother sang at the Apollo Theater many many moons ago, she won first place and a man by the name of Frank LoVecchio took second place, my mother remembers Franks mom smacking him across the face because he lost, if anyone remembers how the old Italians were you will understand that. Lol my mother and Frank started singing together in the Stamford Connecticut area, maybe New York also, I have no idea, it was way before I was thought of. one day Frank tells my mother he wants to go on the road and try to make it big, my grandmother tells my mother, you a no go with a the show people! so Frank went on and obviously became Frankie laine. pretty cool story. my mother in two months will be a hundred years old, she still goes out almost every night, and doesn't take one medication. and believe it or not, yes, she still sings, right in tune also. she's a tank! Lol

A sweeter, kinder, nicer man never walked God's green earth. His talent was strictly the cherry on top of the sundae.

A friend of mine was a minder to frankie when he came to England and he took his mother to see him she was an old lady then and didnt think it was him because his hair was white and not as she remembered him we had laugh but once he started singing it was him no doubt.

I still like those Mercury Originals. He had some great stuff for them. Too bad it was pre-tape and pre-stereo. I think it's only natural to prefer the version you first heard.

In 1947 Frankie Laine recorded for Mercury records which was in those days called "race record" meaning black artist. This was before T.V. so he was booked into a black theatre in Jax, Fl... When he arrived here whoa... there was no way he was appearing in a black theatre so he made the rounds of meeting clerks in local record stores. He had on a blue pin stripped suit and blue suede shoes and stood about6'2 Then in early 1951 when he hit it big with Jezebel I never forgot my first impression of him
