Are the lyrics meaning love is better the second time you love someone else? Or the second time you love the same person?

Oh I hope it will be

Sinatra is singing very interpretively here, but you have to realize what an immense impact Nelson Riddle's orchestration, reharmonizations, side melodies and moving bass lines do to the overall feel of the song. Nelson was every bit the romantic - perhaps even more than Frank himself (look at his love for Rosemary Clooney). Riddle is the man!!!

Lyrics: Love is lovelier the second time aroundJust as wonderful with both feet on the groundIt's that second time you hear your love song sungMakes you think perhaps that love, like youth, is wasted on the youngLove's more comfortable the second time you fallLike a friendly home the second time you callWho can say what brought us to this miracle we've found? There are those who'll bet love comes but once, and yetI'm oh, so glad we met the second time aroundWho can say what brought us to this miracle we've found? There are those who'll bet love comes but once, and yetI'm oh, so glad we met the second time around

Almost 30 years ago this was my wife's and my song. We had both been married before. Both marriages ended in divorce. We've been married 27 years now. The second time is lovlier, with both feet on the ground.

Re:1915fas, listened to the vocal again & it sounds even worse! Man, he's dragging that lyric like it was a dead body. It's about rebirth, not nostalgia! He's not carrying a torch, he's waving it. I just don't get it. But aesthetics is like that. Cole Porter resented the changes Sinatra made in his songs; Rodgers was furious over "Blue Moon" by The Marcels, etc. Not sure what he thought of the Elvis haunted version!

You may be right! Thx for the correction. I can say it's a typo, but it's not! However, "retards" is not impossible, though not strictly musical! Anyway they're from the same root (cognates): go slow; hence retarded child. But your choice is better (ritardando). Re: 1915fas: I love Darin, but he couldn't sing slow because he had limited vocal timbre. Otherwise Darin is amazing, but his voice cracks on certain songs. He did a lot w/his limited vocal equipment.

I think you mean "ritards".

This the way this song should be sung. With a stately measured tempo where the guy is expressing everything he felt when he was apart and now can share with the girl because they're together and understand each other more than before. It is not a rythm song at all. Michael Buble is a lot like Darin who couldn't sing slow maybe because he had a bad heart and had no legato or breath control- something Tony Bennett noticed.

@Richard40171 Oh, no, I agree completely. This song works better with a more steady beat; a swing beat works perfect for this song. I like Buble's version better.

Criticizing a Sinatra vocal is risky, but I think he's taking this song too slow, with too many retards. It worked on "All the Way," but doesn't work on this kind of melody.
