I have never been a big fan of Sinatra, but he certainly was a great singer. I can't see this version being better than Paul Robeson's version. But this one is alright.

Listening to this shockingly good rendition of "Ol' Man River" by Sinatra makes it devastatingly clear just how badly his throat haemorrhage destroyed his voice. He never again sounded anything close to this good afterwards, which is why, I think, he focused on acting for nearly a decade afterwards. Trying to sing after that, he got by largely on phrasing, but compare this to recordings made after about 1952 and you can hear the damage. It was catching this performance in a late night broadcast of this movie that finally made me understand exactly WHY Sinatra had ever developed a reputation as a good singer in the first place. So many years I just shook my head and thought that people couldn't tell a good voice from a bad one. I cannot imagine how he must have felt the first couple of years after the haemorrhage, as he had to come to terms with essentially losing his voice permanently.

Judy Garland is the only white person i can stand to hear sing this, but Frank also has the soul to pull it off.

Just listen to how long Frank can hold those notes! "old blue eyes" could have been an opera singer. A classic example of how Frank Sinatra showed, time and time again, that he was unafraid of stereotypes and convention. He performs the song with visible respect, and although the staging is quite contrived, he manages to relay a sincere emotional message in both content, and delivery. Frank Sinatra may just be the greatest theatrical ballad singer of all time, at least IMHO. Remember, this occurred at a time when humans played actual musical instruments, and sang with their own real voices. Do you think Adam Levine could perform in a similar manner? Really? Live?, and with an orchestra, and only one microphone with no "effects"? I find it highly unlikely. Now Michael Bublé? He could, for sure.

Frank Sinatra sang that song in great form. That scene from that movie is one of his finest singing moments in Hollywood history. The costumes, music, and scenery were all superb. Frank sang Old Man River in an unforgotten manner. Great performance.

i once heard this described as the greatest recording ever made by a white man, and i can't disagree. Paul Robeson sings it with soul though.

This is a song for a great BASS voice, not a puny tenor voice.
