The song was written in 1901 by two men. The music was written by a famous composer, Ethelbert Nevin, who died within weeks or months of writing the song. The lyrics were written by Frank Stanton, who used so-called "Negro dialect," which was sometimes used by so-called "white" lyricists in songs of that era (without their having any fear of being accused of "political incorrectness"). It was used as a lullaby, by a "white" actress in a 1943 movie, and Frank Sinatra recorded it two years later. The title has nothing to do with being strong ("mighty"). Rather, when translated into standard English, it means, "Very much like a rose" -- and it refers to the semblance of newborn, so-called "black" baby, to a flower, in the eyes of his mother ("mammy").
