Francisco Guerrero (Sevilla, 1528-1599)

Maria Magdalene, et altera Maria emerunt aromata,

ut venientes ungerent Iesum.

Et valde mane una Sabbatorum,

veniunt ad monumentum,

orto iam sole, alleluia.

Et intro euntes in monumentum

viderunt iuvenem sedentem in dextris,

coopertum stola candida, et obstupuerunt.

Qui dixit illis: Iesum quem quaeritis

Nazarenum, crucifixum:

surrexit, non est hic,

ecce locus ubi posuerunt eum.

Alleluia.

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary bought spices, intending to go and anoint Jesus.

And very early on the first day of the week they came to the tomb just after sunrise, alleluia.

And as they entered the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right dressed in a white robe, and they were afraid.

He said to them: You seek Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified: he is risen, he is not here, see, this is the place where they laid him.

Alleluia.

There's a great deal of Palestrina in his music.

This motet comes from 1570 book, which I'm currently studying. It sounds perfectly integrated with the rest of the works in this publication. i.e. there are some "similar" characteristics between the music of Spanish composers and Portuguese composers and even with some Flemish composers...

MrSludov, You make an interesting statement: To me, this motet is unmistakably in Guerrero's style - his voice is everywhere - and it was published in Spain during his lifetime. Why are there any grounds for supposing it was actually by Verdelot? Could you be thinking instead that Verdelot composed the parody mass? That too would by unlikely, as Verdelot belonged to an earlier generation and lived only a decade or so into Guerrero's life. (I'm sorry, however, I don't speak Spanish...)

Guerrero was one of the Renaissance "greats". I feel he shines especially in his six-voice motets - as in this ravishing example. He always seems to begin the segunda pars with the greatest tenderness.
