Technically, seehound619, death metal is only defined by its distinct use of harsh screaming, which was coined after the band "Death". Their vocalist was the first to use screams musically. After that, death metal became a genre as the vocal style erupted with popularity in the metal world. So, it has nothing to do with aggression, violence, or what have you. Though often it is associated with such things, it is defined by those things.And before you tell me "other genres of metal use screams", metal is known for its blending of genres. The fact is, when you try to classify a band in a subgenre, you take only its large, overarching qualities. So, a thrash metal band may use screams, but in bands that are thrash metal, the high tempo and aggression are more definitive.

Welcome to the world of subgenre dude . If you read carefully , you can see that this is called MELODIC death metal . Which is a mixture of death metal elements and melodic moments . Another exemple , doom/death metal . Swallow the sun is slow and atmospheric (doom) but they use growls and heavy tuning aswell (death metal). Death metal is a metal genre which bands use with parsimony with another genre.
