I figure the idea is that the singer is already missing a girl who's away, perhaps permanently, and would have been OK if this waitress had just fulfilled her end of the diner contract....but she's got her own agenda. It's just enough to push the poor man back into melancholy. The Halley's joke he coins to himself is just funny enough to keep an even keel in public, and so he keeps pretending her return will be redemptive. Eventually he realizes he can't make either of them bend to his will.

Great song. I wouldn't read too much into it, though. I think these guys enjoy writing songs about everyday thoughts and feelings. They probably had a slow waitress once, comically referred to her as Halley's Waitress (only comes around once every 76 years, like the comet) and decided it might be fun. One of their strengths is composing arrangements that are often ironically contrary to the lyrics.

The lyrics of this song might be comical and mundane, but the arrangement of the horns, the melancholy strumming of the guitar during the chorus, and the Hotel Dusk-esque (great game btw) feel of the verse really brings out a different side to this song.

@17Conaldo17 dunno, its a melancholy, almost sad song imo...FOW have some hilarious songs (leave the biker, planet of weed for example) but this isn't one of them. I suppose all of their lyrics are a *bit* funny
