Mr. Doug Gauss, I posted this great song from your cd, to share with a friend overseas. I'll immediately remove it, should you want me to. Respectfully ~Elena

lyrics:

Way up in northern Florida

Not far from Alabam'

I first met Grayton Jackson

He was a Florida backwoods man

Like three daddies come before him

He makes his livin' off the land

Mind his own damn business

But he'll help you if he can

Singin'

"Sometimes it ain't so bad

Sometimes it ain't so good

I takes it all in stride

'Cause my livin's in the woods

Ain't got much crime or violence

An' we never had no drugs

But the moon comes through the pines

In mason jars and gallon jugs"

Well I was Westbound US-90

There in the heat of a July day

And I saw an old Jimmy broke down

Just this side of Bonifay

When I offered the driver up a ride

He answered with a smile

He said "It's a long way to Miller's Crossroads

But I'll make it worth your while"

Well I told him I was on vacation

That I was out to clear my mind

That I had left my watch in Tampa

And I wasn't pressed at all for time

He said, "Tampa! That's a long, long way from here!

I ain't never been south of Perry"

And then he stopped and took a sip from

The pocket flask he carried

Well he offered me up that bottle

Said "This here ain't store-bought

But it's good for whatever ails ya

From arthritis to whoopin' cough"

Well bein' the fool that I am

Well I takes a big ol' sip

Then I turned so's not to burn him

With the flames comin' from my lips

(refrain)

He said "That's Jackson County whiskey

Been makin' it a hundred years"

Well I was tryin' hard to hear him

Through the buzzin' in my ears

He started lookin' around my van

And he noticed my guitar case

Said "You'll have to do us a tune or two

"When we get out to my place"

He said "Life gets pretty busy sometimes

With a wife and them seven kids

But I ain't never had to look back twice

On anything I did

"If my family's ever needin' something

Or ever lackin' a little cash

I just runs off in the pines

And I runs a little sour mash"

(refrain)

Well Miller's Crossroads is more a place on the map

Than it is any kind of real town

An' I might as well have been blindfolded

For all the roads he led me down

But when we finally got to Grayton's place

Out in them old pine woods

It was plain to see: In a hundred years

The Jacksons have done good

Well, as if he could read my mind, he said

"Uh- I guess I'd better explain"

Said "We got a lotta money a few years back

When they needed the land for the train

"But Papa never let it change him

Claimed that a man needs to work for a livin'

Who could ever want anything more

Than what this land has given?

"So I put the money on back

'Case the kids ever wanna get away

What's good enough for my daddy's good enough for me

So I just reckon I'll stay"

(refrain)

Well I stayed with them the better part of a week

And by then I could understand

How a man with a million dollars

Could still scratch a livin' from the land

I mean, he had seven kids that loved him

His wife set the table well

And I'll tell ya, if it got any better than this

Then God must'a kept it for himself

(refrain)

Way up in northern Florida

Not far from Alabam'

Lives Grayton Jackson

He's a Florida backwoods man

Like three daddies come before him

He makes his livin' off the land

He knows them old pine woods

Like the back of his calloused hand

I miss listening to Ol' Gabby. I grew up with that station each fall and winter for 20+ years when we'd go up to the camp. I was heartbroke when they went under. We were there listening at the end and it hurt.My favorite memory was when somebody called in asking for a Shania Twain song and he said he'd play it when the Ochlockonee flowed backwards! HA! It might have been Jack but at any rate that station was old school for sure! You could actually call in and get through for a request, miss Calico and Jack would talk to you and it seemed they actually cared about what you had to say....nothing like it in Yankeeville...whoops!!!, Florida anymore. This was my Dad's favorite when we'd be up there. I've seen some HARD old school Cracker's go silent in the middle of the night when this one came on."......play it for the boys at the Hog Pen Camp....."

"No drugs just moonshine." Sigh. So ignorant.

This makes me very happy to hear, I've been looking for it for years. Even recorded it with my phone's voice recorder one night when Ol' Gabby played it...kind of like the old days with a cassette recorder and my mama's clock radio.

Your fathers rendition has been playing in my truck for years, I have an old cassette with 14 songs on it. I got it at the north jetty fish camp many years ago. I would love to record a you tube video of me performing, a few of his classics I think you would enjoy how his music has influenced me for many years.

My husband was raised where this song is sung about the Lewis homestead is about 2 to 3 miles in the backwood from Miller's crossroads and he will tell you that is just how it was you lived off the land
