Love this tune.. sung here 25 years ago. When I was growing up, emigration was ever present, for many out of necessity though when I left in 2003 it was out of choice for new experiences. What I like about this song though is how it encapsulates the multiple feelings of having to leave, the wonder of new places, the confusion as to why we were there in the first place, wondering were we wanted back home, the optimism for the future of the country, the hard work attitude, the pride of successful Irish people, the martyrdom of leaving. Its all very Irish (in that I had all of these feelings myself at some point). The eighties are a different world to the one we live in now though.

Many comments on here about the rottenness of the Irish political class....and rightly so! But just remember this! They did not arrive from Mars! They are a direct product of Irish society! They were not inflicted on us by 'da Brits' They are a true reflection of the Irish character.

Strange how none of our Politicians or any of their family have to leave their country to survive. Dirty Rotten Scumbags. I am a proud Irishman but ashamed of what we tolerate from these Lowlife Maggots who govern our nation.

So sad to see people leaving again in large numbers my own parents left in the fifties all our family is now scattered from the USA England Australia all my grandparents grandkids were born outside Ireland thats the price of emmigration and it should never happen in modern Ireland, bankers politicians you have a lot to answer for.

Have to say I like Paddy Reilly singing it and the Wolfe Tones but the Dublin City Ramblers are the best singing it
