danny kirwan wrote this song ,his first, when 15 , and by 17 he had mastered blues guitar , displaying exquisite phrasing and timing and rationing of notes and bending notes to perfection. and add to that guitar talent the fact that he sings fabulously because his voice is so good , and his words are expressed convincingly and succinctly. his songs are as great as it gets. , but he also knew he could only touch upon the blues experience, as a white guy growing up in 1950's england. without his father and growing up in a basement flat with his very much musically inclined mother, he avidly took to schoolwork , and in 1965, at 15, when he acquired his first guitar ,a watkins rapier, his friends knew that if he was home he would be playing guitar. his dozen or so blues songs greatly augment the world of blues , in fact they are all i need and comprise my entire diet of blues. i think danny was wise to move on to hybrid styles of blues rock and funk and pastoral pop rock. danny has a gorgeous and serious attraction to the beautiful and blissful, to optimism, to the best in music , so naturally , rather than focusing further upon something sorrowful , and dwelling upon loss and longing, he moved toward a lighter and brighter beauty. he did return to the sentiment of sad blues on his final solo release of songs, (particularly ''caroline'' ,and ''spaceman,'') , but he left the affectations and trappings of blues for others. it would mean success for many more white guys , such as stevie ray vaughan, who also had no relationship with black hardship, some making way more money than all of the black blues guitar greats combined, which is why danny bowed out. currently buddy guy satisfies my live blues cravings, he has said wonderful things about danny , they played together way back 45 years ago. but from then on danny plays danny kirwan music , the most wonderful of all styles of music . better than all the rest
