Until now I never overly liked this song because of the lack of banjo.

Here's a live version from the masters themselves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDzvVlCkWik

I love all the type of music you mention. Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs (lovely song here), and Stanley Brothers are to me the real bluegrass. Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Handel, etc. are my favourite classical composers. Moon Mullican, Jerry Lee Lewis and Bob Wills are my favourite early blues based Western Swing artists and Jimmie Rodgers invented so much of early country blues. Robert Johnson and Blind Boy Fuller meanwhile are amazing blues. Gershwin was excellent but agree more blues and jazz.

I agree the dobro is what makes this so beautiful.

I wish they would not call some of the modern stuff bluegrass. Call it anything you want, but this is bluegrass. It is like calling George Gershwin classical. Beethoven and Mozart are classical; Gershwin is good, but not classical. Flatt and Scruggs and Bill Monroe are bluegrass. Modern ones may be good, or they may be bad, but if they do not have this sound, they are not bluegrass.

The best part of about Earl's playing, IMO, was his backup. He could really round out a song with those great licks.

The best to bring out Lester's fine baritone lead.

Scruggs is playing in this one. He's just doing back up and never takes a break. Not the best sounding Dobro Josh ever played but there's no mistaking his style

Listen to the '56 verson from the Grand Ole' Opry. The Dobro really makes this version of the song. Flatt had a really good voice and reminds me a LITTLE of the way Patsy Cline sang but of course, no one has ever delivered a song like she did.
