Makes me miss hearing my grandparents play and going to festivals with them. The pickers would play well into the night when the fireflies are out and you all gather by the fire.

Sure is hard losing Earl, Doug Dillard and good ol' Andy in the span of less than 4 months! 8-( But they're playing their best ever for Jesus now! 8-)

I have particularly loved "metal" music for about twenty years, although not exclusively. Hearing Flatt and Scruggs' music, (especially Scruggs on the banjo), makes me yearn for the 20th century when their lives were simpler. Music seemed to be fun then. Their topics are simple life and their music comes from "playing with instruments on the front porch". They are the "real" musicians. They worked together to share a single microphone! I absolutely love these guys and this video! Thanks!

when we used to watch L&Fon tv in the late 50's,early 60's my dad would have to go out and turn the antenna to get better reception while we yelled out good/bad inside.Using sowhaldudes notion, why didn't we just get cable or satellite?geeze.

If by "hilarious" you mean that my observation is a good one - & by "duh" you mean that YOU are admitting to being a complete butt-pirate..... then I couldn't agree with you more! Thanks & good night sweetcheeks. :) oxoxo

@sowhatdude1,.mostly because of lack of room and also none if the instruments were electric so for them to be heard they had to get close to the mic. Same with the singers. Not enough room for extra mics plus other performers would be up right after. This was the early 60' s, think early technology.

The sad news of the day. Earl Scruggs passed on. Like anyone, we are only as great as how long the fruits of our labors last. Since he gave us a music style that continues to grow and evolve, I'd say that's a major measure of great!Flatt and Scruggs - Polka on a banjoYMSB - Harvest Festival 2011 - Polka On the Banjo

Bluegrass, or Kentucky bluegrass, is a type of grass that is native to the state of Kentucky, in the USA. It is still very popular and you'll find it on most golf courses as part of the grass mix for the fairways. The music style was also originally called 'Kentucky Bluegrass' but got shortened to bluegrass as the style spread across the USA. The music style is a hybrid of American folk, country, gospel and hillbilly, the banjo contributing the hillbilly. 'Dueling banjos' is pure hillbilly.

If you actually knew anything about the technology of the time and the normal playing environment of bluegrass and country bands of the time period you'd also know that it is your question that is kind of somewhere between hilarious and "Duh"

Band unity of sound was critical for Lester and Earl, and many more groups, even today.

The thing that is really hilarious is how they all have to constantly shuffle around like they're square dancing or something to get to the ONE MICROPHONE! For goodness sake why didn't somebody think to give each performer their dedicated MIC..... Duh!

The musicianship of Flatt and Scruggs was awesome, they all could play off of each other so well.
