I always believed this song to be her coming of age, 17 when she wrote this, this was her starting to fully feel like an adult, a woman and all the complicities that can come with that. The child is gone symbolizing her soon turning 18 & being an adult in society's eyes and her shedding and stress in youth upon entering adulthood.
