Written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse.

First performed by Negro & The Orchans in the 1964 British musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd (Theatre Royal, Nottingham) with Cy Grant as The Negro and a young Elaine Paige as one of the Urchins. Their version was not recorded, but Grant sang it on his album Cy & I (World Record Club T451), probably predating Nina Simone's more famous cut. Thanks to Luc Goossens (audio) and www.originals.be (info).

Nina has the standard for this song when other singers cover this song they are interpreting Nina'a melodic rendition , RIP Nina

A beautiful version for Feeling Good. Cudos to Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for writing such a beautiful song.

Interesting but nobody comes close to Gilbert Price in the original Broadway production. I saw it, and it stopped the show.

Mr Newley and Mr Bricusee composed some gems. This has always been more than a pop song of which it is considered. From a very clever musical.

I like Ninas version better but the vibe of this, the instrumental is peaceful.

Good to hear the original, but not only is Nina's version more moving, Sammy Davis' puts his whole wonderful spin on it - and yet is very respectful of the lyrics. try it!

Apparently this isn't the original, it was performed in 1956 for the first time, forgot by whom tho.

There almost something missing here; sure it is not bad, but I think the Broadway version by Gilbert Price better captured the emotion of the character.

As long as Anthony Newley is writing and not singing ... I'm good.  When that man opens his mouth it's fucking awful!

Sweely sung, and yes it is the original, but imo without Nina's version it would have been forgotten and there  would be no Buble/Muse covers.

Given how many versions there are of this, it should be used as an intro for a tv show and a different version for every season like "Way Down in The Whole" was for The Wire.
