kind of a sad song. It is about the sadness of forgotten by people. The old womyn represents those people who have fallen through the cracks. This song is trying to get us to remember these people.

Why this song didn't win best song instead of "Chim Chim Cheree," is beyond me.

Anyone else think the old woman could be poppins mother or grandmother? And is Burt her brother (Mary's)?

I think that the meaning behind this song is actually asking for people to feed the orphans of London, aka the birds.

My 3 week old Son loves this song and it is the only thing that gets him to sleep. Me and my Wife now know every word off by heart and blast out like we are on Broadway every night! Haha. Masterclass songwriting and performance from Julie Andrews. Got to love it!!!

This was Walt Disney's favorite song on Fridays after all work he would ask the Sherman brothers to play this for him. One day while they played feed the bird while he looked out the window one of the Sherman brothers heard him say low " this is what its all about"
