That's true; some people spend more time paying attention to every detail about tempo, meter, tuning, harmonies, etc. when writing music while others (the first one that comes to mind is Johnny Cash) makes technically simpler music, but equally great. Personally, I find great pleasure in analyzing complex songs like these and The Mars Volta's. :)

I agree, I think math and art are never without the other. Take visual art, you have the golden ratio and perspective. In music, you have tempo, meter, and frequency. Architecture blends math and art into one entity - form and function. The way I play music, math is very unimportant. Obviously keeping time is very mathematical, but the ideas are where its at. Not to give all my secrets away ;)

Well, I've heard bands use "odd" time signatures and changing time signatures to brilliantly emphasize lyrical themes. Also, math and music are very closely entwined, not just in terms of meter, but sound frequencies, aesthetic melodies, harmony, etc. I think music- and math related actions even employ the same parts of the brain in some cases. On a different level, sometimes odd signatures can make lyrics come alive in a way that plain 4/4 can't. Like in Butterfly Clock, for instance.

That's the thing. If odd time signatures were relevant to the band's message I would say count on. Leave math to the machines I say.

I've found that if I know what's going on, it gives me greater appreciation of the music.

people shouldn't get too into time signatures unless they're writing music. just listen, count if you want, but don't confuse music for math.

@akuongninja It is alternating 7/8-4/4. You count the first measure in 7 and the second in 8.

Can someone PLEASE send me a message and tell me what time signature the beggining of this song is in. I can't tell if they are just playing a weird 4/4 or if it is in something else. Please help.
