It was late fall 1963 or early 1964. I know I was a senior in high school. I loved music so much that I bought my first guitar at Hayes Musci in Ukiah, CA. But at first I couldnt play the songs on the radio. So I would learn new chords by writing a song that worked out with the new chord. Pretty cool., My close friend, Harley and I sang as a duo in the valley and we actually recorded a song that hit the local Radio station and it sure was cool to get that adulation. I had a Nifty Thrify Honda and my guitar strapped to it and when this scrambler rides up to the gas tank to fillup.. I was filling up already. So this guy, says You play? I answered "A little" and he says, "Me too"... I was bold back then and told him that I had written a couple of songs, and he says, "ME too".. So he invites me to his place in Hopland and we rode to his place. There on his couch, He would play a song he had written, then I would play one of mine. Finally I had to go, but he wanted to show me one last song, adn began to play it. It started, "Our Guardian Star Lost all His Glow, The Day that I lost You. ... He sang that song like it was really special and it was. When he was done, I said, you really wrote that song? HE nodded and said yes. we spent a bit of time more and he showed me his Album room and there in eh middle of the wall was The REALRIAA Cetified Million Seller Award. Yes. I had spent a couple of hours with DeWayne Blackwell. Well as I was beginning to leave.. he says, let show you one more song, Im sending it to the Everly Bros.. and I'd like to see what you think.. and he began to play it.. Hey mind you, I was the very first to hear this song except the writer DeWayne Blackwell himself... Wow... I couldnt believe it.. what a song! Yep.. I could hear the Everly Bros doing it for sure with their harmonies... Oh, The Song? You just heard it, "Ferris Wheel". That was a first first for me.. I hadnt even graduated from High School yet, and I heard an Everly Bros song before the Everly Bros did it! Nah I wasnt star struck... Much ... lol Have a nice day folks... enjoy Dewayne's song... And Dewayne, thank you for the memories!.... James B. .
