Contrary to popular belief, Amy Lee did not write this song as a joke. In an interview with Spin Magazine she hinted that the song was dedicated to Ben Moody. It features Amy's solo, un-layered, vocals with a very simple piano track. Some very experimental vocal work is heard throughout this song. This is Evanescence's longest song title.
This was the first post-Fallen song that fans heard about. A website which no longer exists, published in 2004 a note about the upcoming Evanescence album, which probably could be named "Frozen". In the note it said that there would be a song about Ben called "The Last Song I'm Wasting On You."
The song was released as a bonus track on iTunes when The Open Door album was released (the album had to be pre-ordered from the website) and was soon spread around the Internet. The song was also released as a B-side on the Lithium Single.
According to Amy, the real lyrics for the second line are "they're my own veins" and not any other variations of lyrics that some people used to believe.
