(Lyrics below)

A video featuring the art and paintings of Cuzona Allport, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Berthe Morisot, Vincent Van Gogh, John Singer Sargent, and Spadecaller.

The lyrics are a traditional variation of a poem entitled The Brookside written by Richard Monckton Milnes (Lord Houghton) c. 1850 and the tune was created by Barbara Barry (1984).

LYRICS:

I wandered by a brookside

I wandered by a mill

I could not hear the water

The murmuring it was still

Not a sound of any grasshopper

Nor the chirp of any bird

But the beating of my own heart

Was the only sound I heard

The beating of my own heart

Was the only sound I heard

Then silent tears fast flowing

When someone stood beside

A hand upon my shoulder

I knew the touch was kind

He drew me near and nearer

We neither spoke one word

But the beating of our own two hearts

Was the only sound I heard

The beating of our own two hearts

Was the only sound I heard

The Wiltshire Council reveals there is a third verse which lends the full sense:Song LyricsVerse 1I wandered by a brookside, I wandered by a mill,I could not hear the water, for the murmuring wheel was still;Nor the hum of any grasshopper, nor the chirp of any bird,For the beating of my own heart, was the only sound I heard.Verse 2I sat beneath the elm tree, and watched its long, long shade,And as it grew still longer, I did not feel afraid;I listened for a footfall, I listened for a word,But the beating of my own heart, was the only sound I heard.Verse 3There was silent tears fast flowing, when someone stood behind,With his hand upon my shoulder, I knew the touch was kind;He drew me near and nearer, we neither spoke one word,But the beating of our own two hearts, was the only sound I heard.

I might point out that the tune was created by my mother Barbara Berry (not Barry)and she did not write the lyrics. Worldwide Copyright exists on the tune. Please credit Barbara in all performances and recordings.

I have yet to find Eva's match or anyone that comes close for that matter. I've never heard another singer that had such command and control of their voice. You know instantly that this is the real deal and something special.

In The Valley of The Nightingales, by peaceful waters there, That sylvan voice of honeyed cream still dances in the air, Gifted by the shooting star with heart and mind so pure, The softly-spoken blue chanteuse too fragile to endure.

It is an absolute miracle that we have so many wonderful songs by Eva Cassidy available to us considering that she died 16 years ago almost virtualy unknown!!! I had vaguely heard of her name, but only recently discovered her here on YouTube. I have since purchased five of her albums. What an incredible talent!!!

@pberryuk AWESOME!! As I said before, these words speak to me. You are one lucky guy to have a mom who could write such lyrics =)

@pberryuk Hiya Pete you were very lucky to have such an inspirational mother....and your father was a star, we knew them both back in Kirtlington when we worked in the Dashwood....I have your mother's recording of this on a cassette from a long time ago,

So wishing I could obtain the later part of the lyrics in this song. Who's touch did she feel on her shoulder? This song reaches my heart.
