Eric Skye is playing his arrangement of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" on his own signature model Santa Cruz 00 guitar. The Eric Skye model is constructed with an adirondack spruce top and cocobolo for the back and sides. Eric has a website with more of his playing on display: http://ericskye.com/

Guitar Flangdang 2012 is the 8th in a series of acoustic guitar oriented gatherings we have hosted at our home. These events have brought together numerous guitarists and luthiers and filled our house with amazing music and amazing instruments over the years.

This year we added a new feature, the Flangdang Video Booth. I set up a pair of Audio Technica AT3035 microphones and an M-Audio DMP3 preamp to feed audio into a Zoom Q3HD camcorder. This configuration allowed each performer to simply press start, play, press stop. I then edited, titled, and boosted the level of each clip in Edius Neo. No reverb, EQ, or other effects were used so you're hearing the pure sound of the player and guitar.

Found your video via the back door --through a post you had re: ORTF on gearslutz. Can you help me with a question? Would the same ORTF arrangement work with 2 guys playing acoustic guitar / singing and with a amp behind them? Great job btw. Marc

Fran, You're right on the button both with the recording and attempting to describe Eric's superlative playing. I ran out of words a long time ago. He's the best. I am so enjoying watching him excel and continue a path to success. He's put a LOT of work and a LOT of miles in. Thanks for this! One more thing, SORRY I MISSED IT!!!! (I have an excellent excuse)

Eric is so good it's hard to describe without sounding silly. He plays many different styles with mastery, and he always goes for the fun. The recording was so easy, two mics in a crude approximation of an ORTF array, then bump the level about 9 dB in post. It's really all about the source, isn't it? A fine player with an exquisite instrument, then the recordist just has to not mess it up. Fran
