You'r mostly right. Out of wedlock and was raised thinking his mother was his older sister. His father was a Canadian soldier making a whole bunch of families and leaving them. I thin the worst part of the story is that they told him when he was nine, then his mother ran off to another country with another man. Respect to Eric Clapton.

Eric Clapton was apparently raised under false pretenses - he was told his mother was his aunt or something, maybe due to an out-of-wedlock pregnancy - so he didn't have a mother, growing up, but he had an aunt who loved him almost likea mother - if I got that right, then this song would be expressing his affection as well as regret - th esong is so tender, tinged with sadness and yearning love - I guess Eric has his own right to sing the blues, he's been hurt badly enough in his life
