'Roll Alabama Roll' (a 'Call and answer' singing style sea shanty for male voices):

When the Alabama's keel was laid

Roll Allabama Roll

It was laid in the yards of Jonathan Laird

O Roll Allabama Roll

It was laid in the yards of Jonathan Laird

Roll Allabama Roll

It was laid in the town of Birkenhead

O Roll Allabama Roll

Down Mersey way she sailèd then

Roll Allabama Roll

Liverpool fitted her with guns and men

O Roll Allabama Roll

Down Mersey way she sailèd forth

Roll Allabama Roll

To destroy the commerce of the North

O Roll Allabama Roll

To Cherbourg harbour she sailed one day

Roll Allabama Roll

To collect a share of the prize money

O Roll Allabama Roll

And many a sailor saw his doom

Roll Allabama Roll

When the Yankee Kearsage hauled into view

O Roll Allabama Roll

And a shot from the forward pivot that day

Roll Allabama Roll

Blew the Alabama's gear away

O Roll Allabama Roll

And off the three mile limit in '64

Roll Allabama Roll

Well, she sank to the bottom of the ocean floor

O Roll Allabama Roll...

surreal to hear the British sing a sea shanty thats sort of in reference to my state.

It's a good song, but it's about a blatant violation of British neutrality.

Absolutely love this song, and I'm female, but I would definitely consider learning this.

Believe it or not I think this is Phil Cunningham, the famous Scottish Accordion player. I think I have a CD of his with this on - almost certain.

Kevin Canuck: Yes indeed, Kevin, 'beautiful' is indeed the right word to describe this delightful sea shanty...

"hearty" and "vigorously sung"? lol. With the soft chorus and twiddly acoustic guitars?

As you may be aware from my channel I am Irish, an irish speaker, I live in Wales and also speak Welsh but I love folk songs from wherever I can find them. The CD from which I took this hearty sea shanty was found in a second hand shop for 60 pence. I really enjoyed all of it but especially this vigorously sung sea shanty. If I find anything else like that I will upload it of course.
