This video takes a closer look at some common misconceptions about how brass embouchures are best taught and developed. The five embouchure myths discussed are:

1. You should model your embouchure based on your teacher's or a famous player's embouchure.

2. Embouchures are too complex to analyze.

3. There are no embouchure problems, only breathing problems.

4. The best way to develop your embouchure is through a purely musical approach.

5. The mouthpiece should be placed centered with more top lip inside the mouthpiece.

I play with the upper right side of my lips with the top lip pretty much inside the mouthpiece. This makes my trumpet angle upward. Pretty unique as far as I know. Probably not though.

It's true that every rule has an exception, just from the diversity of the "database" as it were. But that's true for some of the assertions here. The one that holds up, is "if it's not broke don't fix it". Jon Faddis' story about capping his teeth holds a lesson for everyone. What looks good doesn't always sound good. The Reciprocal's true, as well, obviously. But there are those people out there that have their cake and eat it too. Lucky @$%^&s

I'm a tuba player working on tone and range primarily. I use a little more top lip, but just barely.

My trumpet teacher said that it's bad to place my embouchure so low but I can't reach higher notes if I place my embouchure the way he want. He said that the way I place her will not use all my mouth's muscle and I'll not be able to have enough endurance for a whole concert. But this video make me glad to see that my embouchure's placement is not wrong ! =)

I never play with my mouthpiece right in the center. I can't. I play with it a little to the right and my embouchure is this way on all wind instruments that I play, flute, trumpet, and mellophone. Idk why mine just is. And I tend to use more bottom lip on my trumpet and mello

Hello I am a trumpet player that has been playing for about 4 years, and I've come across a problem with pressure on the teeth. I have tried several things, including asking my teacher, however I continue to struggle with soreness and pain after I play trumpet on my two front teeth. It has actually caused some movement backwards for my teeth and is uncomfortable. I don't know where to start or what exercises or strengthening skills I should do to take off that pressure and play comfortably. Also it's hard for me to get a good sound out when I remove pressure on my teeth.

What kind of mouthpieces are being used here? I looked at the Wilktone website but couldn't find information on them.

Does Embouchure have an effect on Lip Stamina. I returned to Brass Banding 8 years ago after a 20 year break but still have the same issues with lip stamina as I had when I was at the top of my game in my early 20's. I play Euphonium or Baritone but my lip just seems so weak and I lose my tone and ability to play in a high register very quickly in certain situations. I have tried hours of playing low notes which is supposed to strengthen the lip and always try to do at least 20 minutes of long notes before every rehearsal but I never seem to improve my stamina and my top lip can suddenly just goes to jelly, especially when playing loud passages. It also seems to happen when I have long periods of repeating / sustaining the same note in a piece even if it is not a particularly high note. (d's of 4th line on first valve are always a nightmare) It is almost like my lips have a natural resonance at certain pitches that just wear my lips out rapidly. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You've provided some great insight into this topic, especially for band directors like myself whose primary instrument is not brass. Thanks!

Not a teacher, hardly a student; yet even I realize everyone is different and I would be so surprised if any two players had the same embouchure...probably has to be something developed and tailored to each musician based on some fundamentals and good breathing technique. This is a very interesting and informative film, for me. I am just "in there trying" to make improvements and to enjoy what little I do manage to get right with my Horn.

I play my trumpet to the right side (Maybe learning with braces had something to do with it). In high school i had a few different trumpet teachers/tutors/coaches and only one relentlessly tried to get me to play in the middle of my lips. He had a Dr. in music so he knew what he was talking about and thought i would play better centered and proper. It was like picking up a trumpet for the first time, again. Eventually (about a month of lessons), he came to the conclusion that i play better to the side of my mouth and gave up on "correcting" my embouchure. Until seeing this video i always thought i was weird. But it makes sense… every one is different. As long as you go out kicking and screaming, it doesn't matter how you play the concert!

I agree with you. There is way too much emphasis on correct lip position, when in fact if my face muscles surrounding my lip area are not strong through lack of practise that's where the trouble takes place for me. Cheers, Great video. I'm not gonna get hung up on where my lips sit.

If anyone would like to use another resource for Trumpet problems read Trumpet Technique by Frank Gabriel Campos. He touches on a lot of different subjects. Hard work and proper management of practice time are the only things that will improve your playing. If you wanna be able to do it and it takes you twice as long as someone else to do then as long as you reach your goal, it doesn't matter.
