Wearing his new 'white pyramid' jumpsuit and gold attendance belt as featured on the MSG album cover. Elvis opened his sixth Las Vegas season on 26 January 1972 and the setlist included five new songs and an oldie which would recieve it's first 70's live performance.

The second of those six songs was 'You Gave Me A Mountain' a song which would evolve from being not just an integral part of the Elvis Presley show to a poignant almost autobiographical number especially in hindsight in the final couple of years. Performed almost as a permanent fixture in the setlist from 72-74 including Aloha, it was performed only a handful of times in 75 before being restablished on the setlist from the New Years Eve 75 show through until Elvis' final show in Indianapolis on 26 June 1977.

Despite being written by Marty Robbins, Elvis introduces the song as by Frankie Laine and uses the same lyrics as the latter. Marty Robbins wrote the lyrics in the first verse as 'despised and disliked by my father' and Frankie Laine asked Robbins' permission to change the line to that subsequently used by Elvis which was of course 'deprived of the love of a father'.

The opening show from 26 Jan 72 is still awaiting an official release as FTD opted instead for a compilation of the multi-track recordings from 14-17 Feb instead with a selection from the opening show thrown in at the end as bonus tracks. We live in hope that this opening show will recieve the official release it deserves as it is an excellent show with Elvis in fine voice and good humour.

God did give Elvis. A. Mountain to Climb. Because he made some bad choices broke his Wed vows. Elvis had a lot of regrets but his Faith in God never wavered. He knew in the later years he had to make it right get all the confession out apologize to cillia in his songs always on my mind.
