Responding to Keiko Lee - George Washington was the first American idol. After that there were Abraham Lincoln and Frank Sinatra.

On this day in 1957 {September 27th} Elvis Presley performed at a benefit for 'The Elvis Presley Youth Center' at the Fairgrounds in his home town of Tupelo, Mississippi. At the time of the benefit Elvis was on Billboard's Top 100 chart with "(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear", and the B-side, "Loving You", was also on the Top 100. "Teddy Bear" had reached #1 and stayed in the top spot for 7 weeks; one month later in October "Jailhouse Rock" entered the Top 100 & it would become #1, also for 7 weeks.
