The backup singer on the right is Mark Rivera, and I'm pretty sure the one on the left is tenor Peter Hewlett, both of whom were in Billy Joel's band at the time of this performance (and hence makes sense they would be in NYC and be available for an SNL performance).

A prime example of how great the musical performances on SNL used to be. No flashing lights, no lip-syncing, no cheesy choreography, just solid musicianship and solid performances.

I remember seeing this broadcast live on SNL and it's still a great performance. I think you and the other gentlemen did a wonderful job!

I am currently teaching my 10-year-old daughter to play guitar. I was perusing my iTunes library looking for songs with rudimentary chords (she's just starting out but picking it up quickly). She loves this song as do I but sadly, she has a way to go before her dainty little fingers can master this chord progression. One day, she'll get it and I will be the proudest dad in the world. It's so sad how music has dumbed down, musically and lyrically these days.

Seriously. His version of "Veronica" on SNL is the best version of that song I've ever heard. Haven't seen it on YT in awhile so I'm wondering if it was pulled?

I love this man! It's not too often an artist's voice sounds great on these SNL performances but Elvis nailed it.
