I thought Caribou was a pretty poor album but it was worth the purchase price for this track alone Classic

"Ticking""An extremely quiet child" they called you in your school reports"He's always taken interest in the subjects that he's taught"So what was it that brought the squad car screaming up your driveTo notify your parents of the manner in which you diedAt St. Patricks every Sunday, Father Fletcher heard your sins"Oh, he's unconcerned with competition he never cares to win"But blood stained a young hand that never held a gunAnd his parents never thought of him as their troubled son"Now you'll never get to Heaven" Mama saidRemember Mama saidTicking, ticking"Grow up straight and true blueRun along to bed"Hear it, hear it, ticking, tickingThey had you holed up in a downtown bar screaming for a priestSome gook said "His brain's just snapped" then someone called the policeYou'd knifed a Negro waiter who had tried to calm you downOh you'd pulled a gun and told them all to lay still on the groundPromising to hurt no one, providing they were stillA young man tried to make a break, with tear-filled eyes you killedThat gun butt felt so smooth and warm cradled in your palmOh your childhood cried out in your head "they mean to do you harm""Don't ever ride on the devil's knee" Mama saidRemember mama saidTicking, ticking"Pay your penance well, my childFear where angels tread"Hear it, hear it, ticking, tickingWithin an hour the news had reached the media machineA male caucasian with a gun had gone berserk in QueensThe area had been sealed off, the kids sent home from schoolFourteen people lying dead in a bar they called the Kicking MuleOh they pleaded to your sanity for the sake of those inside"Throw out your gun, walk out slow just keep your hands held high"But they pumped you full of rifle shells as you stepped out the doorOh you danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law"You've slept too long in silence" Mama saidRemember Mama saidTicking, ticking"Crazy boy, you'll only wind up with strange notions in your head"Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

We might be all ticking.Bernie Taupin's lyrical example of the American school system. My experience with governed and institutionalized men, not meant for society, explains this song.If you ever work after hours, you can find misplaced and misunderstood souls.Bernie might not have just been talking about schools, he might have meant everyone...everywhere.

People......obviously this version is not the best version. Elton is older now. He has a very difficult time singing some of these old songs....and even I get irritated sometimes when he takes something down more than a whole step in order to sing it. But please.....this is in the same key as the record. He still PLAYS THE SONG. And that is amazing in itself. I personally am glad that he would choose to play an obscurity like this as opposed to say "I'm Still Standing". His voice is NOT THE SAME as it was in 1974. How could it be??? Just sayin'......

The studio version of this is absolutely amazing. This version is pretty bad. How is it that a rock star of Elton John's caliber could perform such a bad version. The next time he performs this, I'll have to show how him how it's done. Now, I'll have nightmares!

One of my favorite tracks. It was written about gun crime in America at the time. It is was poignant then and is still 40 years later. I have it on vinyl and CD, but I prefer the vinyl version.

To the person who asked what year it was it was 1974 on the album Caribou which I still have on vinyl, just nothing to play it on anymore and IMO nothing sounds like vinyl. It's probably my favourite too and I believed based on a true story.

One of Elton John's most beautiful and moving songs. His voice has changed but he still sounds incredible. Its amazing how he has found ways to adapt his songs to his new vocal range and style. One of the greatest artists of our time.
