From Elton John's 1974 album "Caribou." All vocals by Elton, with mostly solo piano. Synthesizer added at the end by David Hentchel. Elton first attempted to record the vocal and piano separately, but couldn't get the intense feel he wanted. The end recording was done brilliantly live, piano and vocal together.

A truly haunting song. Bernie's lyrics are such that I can almost see the kid/young man in this song and everything that happens. What a talent to be able to paint a picture of a troubled young man and the characters in his life. I can see a group of literary students or something sitting and analyzing the lyrics. I love how Elton's playing mirrors the lyrics. Some of his best playing in my opinion. Also love his vocal harmonies. A truly haunting song.

I have always loved this song and was fortunate enough to hear EJ do it live in of all places, Fresno. It is a sad song but captures the facts of a lot of the mass shootings in this country. Bernie is a genius that by nothing more than circumstance was partnered with Elton and we are the lucky ones to be able to experience the collaboration. I listen to this song a lot, I love the words and the music Elton put to it, he seems to be able to somehow know exactly how to put Bernie's words to music. Thanks for sharing this song on utube.

I HADN'T HEARD THIS SONG since around late-1974. As-of my writing this "comment" during the Autumn of 2014, it had recently occurred to me that it was around the 40-year anniversary of me having first heard "Ticking" -, so I came here to YouTube to search-out and listen-to a nice "HQ"-posting of it.~ It seems odd to consider that, in the mid-`70s -, "mass shootings" were virtually unheard-of, even in America; and frankly, at-that-time this song struck me as being rather "dark-themed" and kind-of weird. TO THINK that 40 years later, America seems to scarcely be able to go several months WITHOUT having some mindless "mass shooting". Over the years, on those occasions when we have had such a tragic incident, this song had often come-to-mind for me.~ By the way, thank you @RonnieFriend for the excellent up-load.
