Such an incredible voice ---- Such perfect lyrics. Surely a collaboration like Elton John and Bernie Taupin are once in a generation. And aren't we blessed, those of us who's lives have been measured in part, with their music as the soundtrack? Each had their own demons, but each had a talent that could not and would not and will not, ever be denied.

I have an audio recording of Elton John at the Playhouse Edinburgh, in 1976. Him and his piano. Among the songs was this one. The orchestrations were good, but he was more than capable of doing the entire job himself. one of the great talents from the early 70s.

Great song and Elton nails it here. But live versions with the three piece (Elton, Nigel and Dee) floor me because it sounds so raw

These early BBC clips show Elton killing on these songs vocally, singing the high parts that vocalists often don't recreate from their recorded versions when they can always do another take to get it right.

I've always loved this song. I think I prefer when Elton is on the ivories as in most live versions of this song. Saw a clip of him playing this song on the Midnight Special tribute to Elton. That is probably my favorite version although I don't know where or when the concert footage was done.

Wow! So amazing to see Elton do a live performance of one of his symphony classics.

Their (i.e.John and Taupin's) early albums contain so many wonderful songs that aren't that well known. The 'Elton John' album that features this song has always been one of my favourites.

Gary I couldn't have said it better When Bernie taupan left there was a large chunk of the music missing the arrangements and lyrics were not the same

The beautiful strings carry Elton's soulfull lyrics into that amazing flamenco guitar. The creciendo at the end takes it all the way. Im 48 and i concur.

I love how as soon as the song ends, he hightails it back to the piano. I also noticed that he's not eating the mic here as he seems to do in some of his later live performances. Either way, a beautiful song!

I love how self conscious he is there without his piano- it's cute because he doesn't really know what to do with his other arm that's not holding the mic Oh, Elton we love you even without your piano! This song proves your music is beautiful no matter what!

I am 60 and this was and still is my music. Evokes memories of us "60" kids. This is still our music. Although may are gone to war, cancer, age.....we still listen. We still count.
