The first song Reg Dwight (Elton John) wrote to lyrics by Bernie Taupin. They hadn't even met yet. Ray Williams had handed Reg a stack of lyrics by this young lyric writer from Lincolnshire. Reg wrote a bunch of songs to these before they actually met later when Bernie came to London. Evidently this was the first one. Taupin later referred to the song in the lyric "Curtains" on the "Captain Fantastic" album. "I used to know this old scarecrow...."

A humble beginning to an amazing songwriting partnership!

This was recorded at Dick James Studios with Caleb Quaye in 1967.

It was never officially released, but a shorter version is on The Unsurpassed Dick James Demos vol. 3 (Yellow Dog 1993).

Excellent! I have (or, so I think) all of Elton John's albums up through Blue Moves, and this song is on none of them. I only learned about it today while look at Elton John in wiki. Is this a b-side? Or is it on some compilation album? I know I could just google it but I'm lazy that way. Actually I googled it and dug around a bit and didn't find anything.
