it could be about Elvis, by 1976 ( one year prior Elvis death) he was heavily submerged in drugs and alcohol abuse, he gained weight and his face was like swollen... ( ...and his face was changed....) that's probably why the song says he was an idol in the 50's . I purchased the album "Blue moves" in 1977 at age 10 , this was my favorite song along Bennie and the jets and tonight.

Well, this is magisterial. It is truly beautiful, and very sophisticated melodically, structurally and harmonically. It's hard to believe that this song was written by two men under 30 years old. I have loved this song since I first heard it 37 years ago this week!! Elton has done songs as beautiful for sure, but not many more beautiful.
