I must have played THE FOX album a million times when I was a kid. This song was my favorite track. This also happens to be one of my favorite songs ever. Elton John is a genius for sure, but never discount the brilliance of his writing partners in furthering his career. Their lyrics brought Elton John's incredible music to life. Thank you to Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Tom Robinson, Gary Osborne, etc.... for a generation of songs never to be forgotten.

Beautiful haunting and profoundly accurate. Grateful that Elton wrote and performed this song with the respect that it deserves.

This is on my list of my favorite Elton John song. I didn't find out until today that Bernie Taupin wasn't the lyricist for this song. I look back at all my school crushes while listening to this song and I can feel myself reliving those moments. "I would give my life for a single night beside you." I had a rough time trying to sort my feelings out as a teenager and lately it's begun to affect me again. If it weren't for Elton John, I would have probably ended my life. He is my music God.

Tom, I shy away from choosing a favorite Elton John song because there are just way too many good ones to choose from. One day, I will put Tiny Dancer on repeat, another day, Funeral for a Friend, and perhaps Circle of Life the next. However, as far as choosing a song that I could totally relate to, it has to be this one. Even before I could finally accept that I am gay at the age of 30, I found myself being that kid in the video. This video helped me not feel so alone, and I am forever gratified that you wrote such a song.Thank you for this song, and thank you, Elton John for performing it, and thanks to all those involved in the production of this video.

And Tom,you're an incredible lyricist! My father kicked me out of the house when I was 17. After many years of anguish at school, and having a thorough understanding of your words,I made my way to NYC in '81, where I initially stayed at Covenant House. My first job was at a greasy spoon on Christopher Street, in the Village. There was a jukebox there, and there were selections from The Fox on it. I met the love of my life just a block away, and in many ways,"Elton's Song" taps into all those feelings I had at that time. Very appreciative here!

I can't think of another song like this. Incredibly eloquent both lyrically and melodically in its description of shame, anguish, and unrequited love. I may have my list of favorite songs, but there are those select few that cut right to the heart in a highly personal way. This is one of those for me! Elton,man...if you only knew!

Worked on the post production of this video. It always touched me since first seeing the camera originals. IIRC the headmaster also appears in 'Just like Belgium' along with many other videos done by Russel. The producer was a young Eric Fellner who went onto bigger things with Working Title.I have good memories of that era as it was one where creativity in music and music videos was at its height. along with the money to do fairly large video productions.

Beautiful track off the hugely under-rated Fox, thanks!

Such a beautiful love song... My Mother used to play it... Gay or straight it just smashes through the heart.

The Fox was the first Elton John record I bought with my own money. I had no idea there was a music video for this song, now realized 32 years later. Wow.

I want to personally thank you for writing one of the most beautiful lyrics about a male and male crush. I have been in a same sex relationship for 25 years now and this song touches me each time I hear it. Thank you for it.

first bought an Elton 'LP' with my Saturday job money back in 1971...love this song, which is so emotive in terms of young, unrequited love....went to Brussels to see 'the Fox tour' - Elton singing Nobody Wins in french.....great days...Tom, does everybody on here know how talented you were/are !!

Unrequited love. I remember this when it came out and it was like a secret I understood. Tom Robinson wrote it and he wrote Glad to be Gay which was a life changer. It, GTBG, was banned on national radio which was the best thing they could have done ;) It was played on non state radio, ha ha! thanks Tom, if you read this.

I used to own a record store and had LOTS of copies of this...but never played one. The review scores on Wiki are good, I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the tip.
