Bernie Taupin has a gift for lyrics doesn't he ? He is truly one talented man.

I much more enjoyed the live performance with Gregg Allman, but then, I'm an Allman fanatic, so anything that includes Gregg can only be better. This is a great song, a departure from the norm. It shows that good musicians can take any genre and shine. Great job !

It seems T Bone Burnett prefers forthcoming album The Diving Board! There's quite a buzz round it from people who've heard it..

@jrhunter007 I have to kind of agree, that Elton's voice isn't what it once was, but alas, after his voice chord surgery it changed forever. All in all I'm glad he's still singing. Who knows if otherwise he would've put out such an incredibe album together with Leon. And actually, when singing it live, he sings the first two verses the style Leon and Neil did it, which sounds fantastic.

One of Neils' lines, "... the stunned surprise in the eyes of dying men" so characterizes the horrors of war, especially THAT war. Thank you Elton! And thank you too Neil & Leon!!

Leons' voice suits this song perfectly... feels like he had actually been there. Neils' harmony is the perfect compliment. Then old Neil does his bit, my favorite part in the song. Eltons'? Well, it's OK if you like opera (and I was an Elton fan in the 70s'), but then again he wrote it, didn't he? And he brought Leon in. If you're a Civil War buff such as I, this song will surely tug at your heart. My great grandfather, from Tennessee, refused to fight for the south, he supported the Union....

I could not put my finger on why this album sounded so good to a rocker/blues person like myself. Its t bone burnett who produced. every detailed sound is with such purpose. the details are almost infinite

This is a hell of an album. I doubt builderbro would know a good album if it crawled into bed with him and ended his virginity.

So Neil "warbles" does he....LOL....and Leon always sounds like he's got shit his mouth.... Anyway, 3 unique and recognizable voices wrapped-up in a dirg with pretty cool lyrics. They are very skilled artists.

I disagree with the comments about Neil Young. On this amazing song it is the use of these three incredible voices combined that helps make it one of the finest song Elton has done in years. Breath taking and haunting as you take in the voices and all of the musical elements going on in the background. Up there in my top ten Elton songs.
